Nyantakyi blames Kotoko, Hearts for Oak for lack of support from gov’t for Ghanaian football clubs

Former President of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi has disclosed why government has failed to support football clubs that make it to Africa in Ghana.

He said under the leadership of Yaw Osafo Marfo, government set up a revolving fund as a means to support the clubs that had qualified for the Champion and Confederations Cup.

Nyantakyi disclosed that the agreement was that if the clubs enter the money zone, they will refund the monies so they can be given the next time when they qualify for the competition.

However, although Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oakqualified for the money zone during that year, they failed to pay back the money.

He says these two clubs could be the reason why governments have failed over the years to support football clubs.

“When Osafo Mafo was the Sports Minister he set up a revolving fund. This fund was to take care of the main expenditure which includes airfare and accommodation. King Faisal and Berekum Chelsea did not reach the money zone but Kotoko and Hearts of Oak did. However, they failed to pay back per the agreement that they will pay the monies taken when they get to the money zone.

“The revolving fund collapsed. One of the ways government could have helped was the revolving fund but when the money is given out and you spend all without paying back they cannot keep giving out cash,” he said in an interview.
