Okyenhene contacts E/R NPP MPs backing Ofori-Atta’s sack; says Palace won’t forget their names

The Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori-Panin has reportedly cautioned two MPs from the Eastern Region for backing the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Minister of Finance.

The Okyenhene who was peeved his invitation to the two NPP MPs late night to his Palace was not heeded reportedly scolded them via phone conversations for going against their “brother”.

The Akyem Abuakwa Chief sought to find out their rationale in person but the MPs were part of a group invited to a meeting in Jubilee House by President Akufo-Addo on the same matter.

Ghanaians were shocked yesterday when some Members of Parliament who are part of the Majority Caucus, including the Eastern Region MPs called for the dismissal of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

The group made the announcement to the media in Parliament on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.

Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for the Asante-Akim North Constituency, who introduced himself as the spokesperson for the disgruntled Majority MPs group, said they decided to voice their position because several concerns sent to the government have failed to yield any positive results.

According to the group, sacking Ofori-Atta and Adu Boahen will help restore confidence in Ghana’s economy.

Who is Ken Ofori-Atta

Hon Ken Ofori-Atta, assumed office as Ghana’s Finance Minister on January 27, 2017. At the time, Akufo-Addo justified his appointment saying he brought to the Ministry over 30 years’ experience in Ghanaian and international financial sector.

Ken Ofori-Atta was a Co-Founder and former Chairman of the Databank Group (an investment banking firm) in Ghana. He was the Executive Chairman from 1990 until his retirement on February 14, 2012.

Prior to co-founding Databank in 1990, the Hon Minister was an investment banker at Morgan Stanley and Salomon Brothers on Wall Street in New York. He has other business interests in Insurance, Retail Banking, Private Equity, Micro finance, Pharmaceuticals and Real Estate.

Hon. Ofori-Atta was the first African to be honoured as a Donaldson Fellow at Yale University in 2010, a John Jay Fellow at Columbia University in 2011 and also a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute. He is a Co-Founder of the Aspen African Leadership Initiative.

He was also the first African to testify at the US Congress Ways and Means Committee to support the AGOA law. He was twice honoured by PriceWaterHouse Ghana as one of the Top 5 Most Respected CEOs in Ghana.
